STEVE LEADENHAM |
ARTIST PROFILE: STEVE LEADENHAM
Steve pursued a career in the rail transport industry in Yorkshire and London during the 1970's finding time to produce the occasional painting. He married in 1980 and moved to Sydney. In recent years, with his family now grown, Steve has returned to serious painting, producing an increasing number of works many of which are in the possession of collectors and corporate clients in Australia, the United Kingdom, Europe, Japan and the United States. His association with the aviation photographer, Sam Chui, led to three paintings being displayed at the Airliners International 2003 convention in Columbus, Ohio in July that year and his work was selected for publication in a transport-themed calendar in the UK in 2005. In 2004 Steve held his first solo exhibition at the Qantas Founders Museum at Longreach, Queensland and the following year joined fellow aviation artists Nikyla Amanda Smith and Juanita Franzi in an exhibition entitled "Aerial Artistry" at the same venue. He returned for a further solo exhibition in September 2006. He regularly exhibits with his local art society in western Sydney. Whilst civil and commercial aviation figure prominently in Steve's work, he is happy painting any form of transport as well as the occasional landscape and portrait. An increasing number of works are now being produced in response to special requests and commissions both private and commercial. A commission from the Ambulance Service of New South Wales was adopted as the visual theme for the 40th anniversary celebrations of their Air Ambulance branch in 2007. A limited edition print of the painting was endorsed by the late Nancy Bird Walton. In co-operation with the Qantas Foundation Memorial he completed five paintings commemorating the restoration of Qantas Airways first Boeing 707 at Southend and its subsequent return to Australia in 2006. These painting are now displayed at the Qantas Founders Museum. Steve produces and publishes a range of limited and open edition giclee prints and cards based on his original artworks. He has won a number of awards, the most recent for best oil painting at the "Art of Sydney" exhibition at the Australian National Maritime Museum in January 2009. He retains his long-standing fascination with all forms of transport and is a keen amateur photographer. |
