ARTIST PROFILE: Juanita Franzi
Sydney, NSW

Readers of aviation books, magazines and technical publications are becoming increasingly familiar with her high quality artwork. Her profile drawings, technical drawings and narrative illustrations are inspired by her lifelong passion for aviation. Each artwork is extensively researched before Juanita brings it to life with her artistic skill.

Juanita established Aero Illustrations in 1994 and since then her work has appeared in magazines throughout the world. She has illustrated over 30 books, as well as art-prints and promotional posters. Her work was included in an art exhibited at the QANTAS Museum in 2005. There are now over 1,000 profile drawings and various cutaways, scale drawings, maps and model variant diagrams in her collection.

From an early age Juanita pursued her interest in aviation through model making, gliding and as a volunteer assisting with aircraft restoration for the Australian War Memorial. Later she became the editor of the Australian WW1 Aero-Historical Society journal and continued to develop her knowledge of aviation history and the evolution of aircraft technology.

Juanita studied technical drawing before going on to gain a degree in industrial design. She worked as a designer in several consultancies before joining the Australian Design Council to manage a division of the Awards programme. This design training and philosophy is carried through into her diagrams and her focus on tailoring technical information to suit audiences.

Juanita's illustrations are primarily intended for print reproduction. It was apparent from the late 1980's that publishing would eventually become totally digital. For this reason Juanita made an early decision to utilise computer based tools to create her artwork. She uses a combination of vector graphics (Freehand, Illustrator) and pixel base software (Photoshop).

Juanita has stock artwork, such as profiles, available for publication under license. She also undertakes commissioned work.
