ARTIST PROFILE: DANIEL BURKE
Faulconbridge, NSW

From the beginning I wanted to make marks on paper. This wasn't related to colour, just to the world around me. Drawing was just a part of my life. In the period when I left high school I was pushed toward Commercial Art (today's 'Graphic Design') because they couldn't work out what else I woould be good at, except perhaps draughtsmanship.

My first job was with a small advertising agency next to the GPO in Sydney in 1970 and a month or two after starting work the boss, a rascally ex RN officer named Peter James ordered me off to learn to draw at the Julian Ashton Art School. As you might expect I thought I could draw very well already but to his credit Peter could detect a need. So while Peter went to weekend social classes in sketching and watercolour around the harbour, I was packed off to the lonely night classes spending about a year there developing my abilities. It may have been lonely but it was one of life's most valuable experiences.

The advertising industry eventually consumed my ability to illustrate for commercial purposes while the publishing industry accepted my editorial illustration, and along the way I became a designer and worked my way through a lot of advertising work and several business partnerships before going it alone. There followed a considerable body of illustration for Qantas in Sydney, the RAAF and British Aerospace.

In 1989 I moved into teaching while maintaining a professional practise, first teaching art classes in the technical college system then as a Design lecturer at the University of Western Sydney. I left university life in 1996 to work on multimedia projects, the main one being an aviation art related project, then returned to teaching for several years in the college system. I currently hold a contract as Art Director for Australia's pre-eminent Drag Racing magazine, Dragster Australia.

Ironically, I find that drag racers and their engineers and builders have a great deal in common with those in the aviation world.

Painting, drawing and photography still feed my need to express myself one way or another when I am not engaged in contractual obligations. I have always maintained a keen interest in history and military history and now focus my artistic pursuits in this direction.

I work in many media but predominantly oil and acrylic paint on board or canvas, and in watercolour. My aviation art has included profiles, figurative work, tri-services illustration as well as aviation subjects, and both historical and contemporary subject matter.
